Build Every Percentage From 10%
Almost any everyday percentage can be built starting from 10%, and finding 10% costs no effort - just shift the decimal one place to the left.
10% of 85 → 8.5
10% of 6 → 0.6
Once you've got that number, everything else is a small adjustment on top of it:
- 20% = the 10% figure, doubled
- 5% = the 10% figure, halved
- 15% = the 10% figure plus half of it again
- 30% = the 10% figure, tripled
Try 15% of 80: 10% is 8, half of that is 4, so the total is 12 - faster than unlocking your phone to check.
Flip the Percentage
Here's one that catches people off guard: x% of y always equals y% of x. So the moment a percentage question feels clunky, just swap the two numbers around.
75% of 4 → easy: three quarters of 4 = 3
Or take 16% of 25 - flip it to 25% of 16, which is a quarter of 16, so 4. Both versions reduce to x × y ÷ 100 underneath, and multiplication doesn't care which order you do it in.
Working Out a Tip
Say the bill lands at £42:
20% tip → 8.40
15% tip → 4.20 + 2.10 = 6.30
Splitting the check with friends? Work out the tip before you divide - dividing first tends to leave you with messier numbers to deal with.
Multiplying by 5
Halve the number, then tack on a zero. Halving is nearly always the easier move compared with multiplying by 5 head-on.
36 × 5 → 18 × 10 = 180
7 × 5 → 3.5 × 10 = 35
Multiplying by 9
Multiply by 10, then subtract the original number back off.
16 × 9 → 160 − 16 = 144
There's also a finger trick for the nine times table that's handy while you're still learning it: hold up all ten fingers, fold down the nth one, and read the tens and units off the fingers standing on either side of the gap. For 9 × 4, fold finger four - three fingers remain to the left, six to the right, so 36.
Squaring Numbers Ending in 5
Take the digit before the 5, multiply it by the next whole number up, and stick "25" on the end.
65² → 6 × 7 = 42 → 4225
95² → 9 × 10 = 90 → 9025
This is one of the rare "party trick" shortcuts that's genuinely fast enough to be practical rather than just showy.
Quick Divisibility Checks
Useful when you're simplifying a fraction and just need to spot a common factor fast:

The digit-sum checks for 3 and 9 are the two worth actually memorizing - they turn "does 4,281 divide by 3?" into something you can answer in about two seconds.
Estimate Before You Calculate
This one isn't really a trick, it's a habit, and it might be the most useful item on this page. Before working anything out precisely, take a rough guess at what the answer should look like.
Say you're finding 18% of 340 and 612 pops out. Your rough estimate (close to 20% of 340, so somewhere around 68) tells you instantly something's wrong, probably a misplaced decimal. Without that estimate, 612 just sits on the screen unchallenged.
Most calculator mistakes aren't math mistakes at all - they're typos. A quick estimate is the cheapest way to catch one before it turns into a real problem.
Adding by Rounding
Round one number to something easier to work with, then correct for the difference afterward.
→ 50 + 38 = 88 (that's 3 too many)
→ 88 − 3 = 85
The same trick works for subtraction: 83 − 29 becomes 83 − 30 = 53, then add the 1 back to get 54.
What's Not Worth Learning
Plenty of the "tricks" floating around online end up slower than grabbing a calculator once you factor in the time it takes to remember them. Multiplying random three-digit numbers, elaborate cross-multiplication routines, squaring shortcuts that only work for a narrow band of numbers - fun to know about, but in practice your phone will be unlocked before the method even comes to mind.
