The Seven Symbols You Need
The entire system is built from just seven letters. Master these seven and you can construct any number from 1 through 3,999.

Two Rules Cover Everything
Rule 1: Add When Values Go From Big to Small
Whenever a smaller symbol follows a larger one, you just add the two together.
LX = 50 + 10 = 60
DC = 500 + 100 = 600
MDCCC = 1000 + 500 + 100 + 100 + 100 = 1800
Rule 2: Subtract When a Smaller Symbol Comes First
Flip the order - put a smaller symbol directly before a bigger one - and now you subtract instead of add. This is where most people stumble, but there are only six combinations to keep straight:

You'll never see something like IC for 99 or VX for 5 - those pairings simply don't exist in the system. Subtraction is limited to one symbol at a time, and only the six pairs above are valid.
How to Read a Roman Numeral
Work through the symbols left to right. At each one, glance at whatever comes right after it. A bigger symbol next means you're looking at a subtractive pair - subtract the first from the second and treat the pair as one unit. Anything equal or smaller means you just add the value and move on.
M = 1000 (next symbol, C, is smaller → add it on its own)
CM = 900 (C sits before M → subtractive pair)
XC = 90 (X sits before C → subtractive pair)
IV = 4 (I sits before V → subtractive pair)
Total: 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = 1994
MCMXCIV, then, comes out to 1994 - a year you've probably seen at the end of plenty of movies.
How to Write a Number as a Roman Numeral
Break the number into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones, convert each piece on its own, then line the results up in order.

Why Clocks Often Show IIII Instead of IV
Look closely at a Roman-numeral clock face and 4 is often written IIII instead of the technically correct IV. Nobody has a fully agreed-upon reason why. One theory says IIII balances the clock face visually, sitting directly opposite VIII. Another points to a habit among royal clockmakers that simply stuck. Either way, seeing IIII on a clock isn't an error - it's just an old convention that never got updated.
Where Roman Numerals Fall Short
As an actual number system, Roman numerals have real weaknesses: there's no symbol for zero, no clean way to express decimals, and multiplying or dividing with them is a genuine headache. That's a big reason the Hindu-Arabic system eventually replaced them almost everywhere it mattered.
